That Boy by Jillian Dodd follows three best friends: Jadyn (JJ), Danny, and Phillip. They have grown up together and have done everything together. They are always there for each other through the good and bad moments; and even when complicated feelings threaten to get in the way, they stick together and support each other through it all.
This Boy is told from JJ’s point of view and her voice is that of an innocent young girl who grows into a confused teenage girl who grows into a confident young woman. There a love triangle between the three characters but the main focus of the story is about their friendship and how they are always there for each other. This really is small town girl and boy next door type of story. Danny and Phillip are complete opposites in many ways but they would each do anything for JJ if she asked. For the most part, I enjoyed JJ’s voice telling her story but, there were some times that I wanted to just shake some sense into her.
Of course, this could be because from the very beginning, I knew which boy JJ was going to wind up with even if she didn’t. I don’t want to spoil anything but, I think that given there are two more books that follow this particular story line (That Wedding and That Baby) I honestly don’t think I’m giving much away. Like I said, Danny and Phillip are completely opposites. Where Danny is a playboy and a bit flaky at times, Phillip is a sweetheart and dependable. And because JJ herself can have a bit of a wild and flaky side, it is the sweetness and dependability that she really desires in the end.
As a reader, you follow JJ through 12 years of her life in That Boy. She experiences romance and tragedy which brings many changes to her life but, the one thing that she can always depend on is that her two best friends will always be there for her no matter what. As someone who loves small town books, this was an easy and enjoyable read for me on Kindle Unlimited, and I was looking forward to seeing what happened next with JJ, Phillip, and Danny.
